Bob Newhart
Nov. 4th, 2007 03:56 pmI am always very careful about what I write in this journal. I knowingly self - censor in an attempt to prevent entries from being too maudlin or angry. I write angry entries and rants but I at least attempt to make them a bit funny. Entries that are actually truly angry or emotional I tend to make private or to delete simply because they embarrass me later. However I have not consciously tried to make my journal a reflection of positive emotions either, which I think is a bit of an oversight on my part. I like to write because it makes me happy and I like to write in my journal because it's a way to stay connected with people who are not with me. As I have commented in the past, one of the blogs I read regularly is "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin. She is very deliberately setting out to record what makes people happy, and how to make herself happier. She comments several times a week with happy quotes, or with 'secrets' she's learned about being happy.
Lately she's been promoting the idea of individual happiness projects. I haven't thought too much about consciously attempting to make myself happy, however one of the things she talks about is moving out of your ruts, and seeking out things that interest you and make you happy. For example, she has a not so secret love for children's books, so she made a special trip to a Rare Books Archive in NY where she lives to look at the books of a particular author she enjoys.
I thought that was really interesting. Anyway, so today, procrastinating, I turned on the tv to see if there was anything on other than football. On CBS they were having a special on Bob Newhart, and I watched the entire thing. It made me happy, and it made me laugh. I never before knew so much about Bob Newhart. I particularly enjoyed the quote (paraphrasing), "Bob Newhart knows how to do things, and to do them right and then go home. This isn't his life, this is work.' I liked this quote because it is so opposite to many things you hear about work and how you should feel about your job. Bob Newhart's passion is clearly comedy, and that is a very big part of his life. He goes to work and has fun and does a good job. However he also loves his wife and children and has a life outside his job. ^_^
I started my Nanowrimo last night. Already I dislike everything I wrote, but I'm not starting over or deleting it. Nope. Just going with it, we'll see what comes of it.
Here is an semi-annual list of the blogs/journals/sites I like to frequent just because:
www.slacker.com like www.pandora.com
- free online Radio. Both sites are good, Slacker has some different features from Pandora and it's worth checking out too
www.neatorama.com
Totally random links, yesterday they had an article about the annual ninja parade in WI (?) where for the third year in a row the 3000 people watching for the parade didn't see any ninjas hahahhaha
www.foxkeh.com
A site which makes cute wallpaper with Foxkeh the Japanese mascot of Firefox ^_^
http://community.livejournal.com/ru_cats_daily/
A site in Russian which posts cute cat pictures daily...the pictures make me smile, I obviously can't read what the posters say about them, but I like it that way. I can just look at the pictures without thinking about anything.

Those are some of the sites I frequent.
Trivia fact of the day: Bob Newhart's 'spoken word' record, "The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart" outsold all the albums of Elvis (except Blue Hawaii) and the Beatles.
